“America 250 Unforgettable: The Great American Songbook”

We pick up where we left off last season with another musical celebration of “America 250”. What could be more central to that collection than Frank Sinatra’s “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”. Sinatra delivered a song with a sense of timing and a tone that set Frank in a league of his own, and guest artist Johnathan White is up to the task. Then there is that iconic Nat and Natalie Cole duet “Unforgettable”. Esther Rose Spade joins Johnathan on that and on the “Balcony Scene” from Bernstein and Sondheim’s West Side Story. Rounding out that program is John Williams’ “The Patriot” and Aaron Copland’s “Buckaroo Holiday from Rodeo”, as well as our usual surprises.

“Falla Your Heart!”

“Falla Your Heart!” Manuel de Falla is Spain’s premier composer; to the flamboyant and sultry Spanish tradition he brought an impressionist’s palette in his masterful symphonic works, operas and ballets. We’ll offer excerpts from “The Three Cornered Hat”, “Love, The Magician” and “The Brief Life”. We’ll also hear from Falla’s fellow Spaniards; Isaac Albeniz’ “Iberia”, Joaquin Turina’s “Danzas Fantasticas”, and we’ll also experience first hand the call of the gypsy lament and the tango.

“Just Folk”

For our season closer, we’ll bring you a carefully chosen and extremely personal musical expressions, from composers whose aspects of love could not be more apparent. Edward Elgar’s “Enigma Variations” is a gorgeous musical offering emerging from a deep friendship. Hungarian folk themes resound in the works of the legendary composer/educator/philosopher Zoltán Kodály in his “Háry János Suite”. Sergei Prokofiev’s take on the Russian folk tale of “Cinderella” is unique yet universally expressive. And then there’s a particular masterpiece that will make you wish you were Catalonian; Marie Joseph Cantaloube’s “Songs of the Auvergne” a pastoral folk song landscape that is immensely satisfying. Our own American folk heritage resounds in a new orchestration of “Shenandoah”, while “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius shines with a fervent love of country, freedom and independence.

It’s a great season, the ticket price is still zero, the audience continues to grow, and the orchestra sounds great. Come join us!
